What is Park-Way for a Day?

Proposed for fall 2024, Park-Way for a Day would be San Diego’s largest one-day open streets event on the 163 freeway in Balboa Park. The event would connect the communities of Downtown San Diego, Bankers Hill, and Hillcrest in a whole new way while using design to reimagine the public realm.

The event would offer people a rare chance to experience this public space free of cars by creating a more serene parkway for walking and biking activated by local art installations, music, and community-based entertainment. The temporary conversion of a freeway into additional park space offers a glimpse into how a quiet, restorative, and car-free experience truly enhances health and livability.
